CommVault – Software Updates via HTTP/HTTPS

This is an early release feature that was slipped in without much fanfare. If you installed your CommCell using or after Version 11 SP5, you’ll be quietly downloading CommVault updates over HTTPS. For many of us though, our CommCells have evolved over various upgrades and downloads would be using FTP. While this has generally been ok, I’ve found it tends… Read more »

CommVault – Upgrade DDB to Transactional Mode

The deduplication databases (DDB) are arguably the most important component in an efficient and fast CommVault environment. If you’ve ever had a Media Agent fail unexpectedly before the DDB’s were able to gracefully shutdown, you’d be well aware the the restore and rebuild times can be very long. In Version 11, there have been improvements made to the DDB architecture,… Read more »

CommVault v10 SP14 – Issue with Synthetic Full Backups

I recently upgraded my CommCell from v10 SP13 to SP14. As usual, the upgrade was easy. Centrally deployed, no issues. The next set of scheduled fulls kicked off a few days later, and soon after there appeared to be an issue with Synthetic Full backups. In the Job Controller they appeared to be normal. Throughput data was there, there were… Read more »

CommVault – The need for speed, pt 1

No Comments on CommVault – The need for speed, pt 1

Speed and performance is an important capability of a Data Protection solution. Most people logically attribute this to being able to finish all tasks in a defined “window“. Commvault Simpana – Automating DBMaintenance utility execution with qlogin and Powershell

Running the dbmaintenance utility regularly is a great way to get the Commcell database in ‘primo shape. Over time, data is aged, clients are reconfigured/deleted and this can all add up to indexes getting out of date, oversized tables etc. It’s recommended to do a Full DBMAINTENANCE operation every 6 months, as per CommVault latest guidance : https://ma.commvault.com/KB/Details/30208 A ‘FULL’… Read more »

This now becomes the 3rd post regarding the infamous Changed Block Tracking bug that was/is evident in all versions of ESXi 4+. If you missed them, Part 1  &  Part 2 Finally today we see the bug squashed in ESXi 5.5 with the release of Patch ESXi-5.5.0-20150104001-standard (2099271). This still leaves 4.x susceptible though so I urge any good folk using… Read more »

VMware ESXi CBT Bug – Your data may be at risk

Changed Block Tracking (CBT) is a great feature introduced in ESXi 4.0, that effectively brought incremental backup technology to our virtual machines. Third parties were able to leverage this so backups would only require the processing of blocks that have changed rather than all blocks. This saved inordinate amounts of time, data and effort while allowing vendors to support flexible backup… Read more »
